Curating The Perfect Entertainment

Entertainment shapes the mood of your event. It lifts the energy, creates atmosphere and encourages guests to connect. In a marquee setting, the options are wide-ranging and highly customisable, but with that comes a need for careful planning.

Start with the tone you want to create. Romantic and elegant? Lively and bold? Or something that evolves as the day unfolds? Your entertainment should reflect your style, but also compliment the shape and flow of your celebration.

Think about the structure of the day. The ceremony often suits something gentle and refined—like a string quartet, harpist or acoustic duo. Drinks receptions are more relaxed, so roaming musicians or light jazz can work well. For the evening, a full band or DJ will help set a celebratory tone. Adding a saxophonist, percussionist or even a vocalist can bring extra energy.

Book early. Many high-quality performers get booked a year in advance. Locking in your entertainment early helps avoid disappointment and allows time to plan the technical requirements.

Marquees offer flexibility, but also need more coordination. Ensure the power supply can support lighting and sound equipment. Consider the acoustics—especially with larger structures or open sides. Work with your production team to get the balance right between quality sound and respecting any noise restrictions.

Lighting is part of the entertainment experience. Warm lighting during dinner creates a relaxed feel. Later, stronger lighting over the dancefloor can shift the mood. Use lighting to highlight performers or create atmosphere, and choose systems with dimmers or colour options to adjust as the event progresses.

Also consider guest experience. While the entertainment should reflect your personality, it should also engage a broad audience. Familiar songs, varied sets and performers who interact with guests help keep energy levels high and the dancefloor full.

Live music has particular impact. The connection between musicians and guests creates a shared moment. If you’re booking a band or act, ask for video samples or see them live if possible.

For something different, think beyond music. Magicians, aerial performers, live artists or interactive installations can add depth and personality. These work especially well during transitions—between courses, before speeches or late in the evening.

Curating the right entertainment takes time and coordination, but it’s worth the effort. It enhances your atmosphere, anchors the structure of your day and helps create memories your guests won’t forget.
